PEACE OUT 2016: A Visual Survey

sparkle party

Today is the day of my first Saturn Return.

HOORAY but also ARGH!

I woke up this morning with a herbal hangover, a sore neck, and bills to pay.

ISN’T GROWING OLDER SUPER

I have plenty to say about the super-fun journey of the Saturn Return, which I’m sure ‘ll be sharing you soon.

BUT TODAY, A FUN GAME!

My friend Gala Darling, the Virgo Queen, recently shared an end-of-year survey with a twist — each question must be answered with a picture instead of words.

I’M INTO IT.

I’m a sucker for end-of-the-year rituals that are fun, have an air of spell-casting, and prompt me to reflect deeply and intuitively on what’s past and what lies ahead. Something about distilling each answer down to one image engaged my brain in a very different way than if I were to attempt answering these questions in poetry or prose.

I LOVED IT.

If you do one of your own, or if you already have, please link to it in the comments below! I want to see!

LET’S DO IT!

HELL YEAH SPACE KITTEN

Wishing you all a very uneventful last few days of this shit-butt year. May we be blessed in the new year. May we tickle many baby kittens and laugh so hard we almost but not quite throw up. Let’s reclaim the world with kindness and compassion, feet planted firmly on the path of our soul’s true purpose.

Let the years we’re here be kind
Let our hearts, like doors, open wide
Settle our bones like wood over time
Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine

A little broken, a little new
We are the impact and the glue
Capable of more than we know,
We call this fixer upper home.

Captain's Log

Captain’s Log: All We Seek Is Here Where We Stand

what's on the captain's mind?

This is not mere speech
all we seek is here where we stand and
shape as clay, turning tides dug deep and
wider still to hold what comes
and wider still to say
We’ll never be moved from here
our lives will live in the seeds we’ve sown…

— Ayla Nereo, “Seeds” from The Code of the Flowers

Stand in the place where you live.

So singeth R.E.M., anyway.

I can’t help but notice that this place where we live – planet Earth of star Sol – is kind of, um…hurting.

In many places.

I also can’t help but notice the quality of love bubbling and cropping up among the broken and hurting places.

You all know the words:

ring the bells that still can ring
forget your perfect offering
there is a crack in everything
that’s how the light gets in

(R.I.P. Leonard Cohen)

All around me, I see so much light.

You’re radiant. You’re hurting, too; I know. The Earth our home is hurting; how can we not be hurting alongside her? For many, this hurt is all too literal: tear gas, rubber bullets, tasers, broken necks and lost lives. For others, the pain of the land and her children is a silent scream, one that may over time be ignored like the roar of the waterfall next door. Normalized. Deadened. Adjusted.

Human beings are powerfully resilient and adaptable, even unto a fault. We can adapt ourselves into numb slumber so easily, it’s scary. Hard to believe.

But it’s true, and we’ve got to wake up. Our lives depend on it.

The blood of the people stains the land at Standing Rock. They bravely put themselves in the way in order to prevent oil from staining the life-giving water.

I mean this is literally an episode of Captain goddamn Planet, people!

Bad guys with oil pipes threaten sacred Native land and bodies, not to mention DRINKING WATER which we KIND OF NEED to SURVIVE.

Unacceptable.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

If you’ve got time to spare, call. Call your representative, your senator, the sheriff’s departments that are harassing water protectors, your bank if they’re a DAPL supporter, and bug the shit out of them. Pleasantly and politely, of course. Leslie Knope the crap out of them, my friends. And if you can’t call, write.

If you’ve got money to spare, donate. See links below for more information.

If you’ve got a platform, use it. Talk about this issue. Make art about it. Sing about it.

I love (love, LOVE!!) this song by Lyla June:

Rise up
All you warriors of love
All you answers to the prayers of our ancestors from above
I can feel it in my heart
Can you feel it in your blood?
I can hear the Seventh Fire calling us to wake up
Wake up!

— Lyla June, “All Nations Rise”

It’s Scorpio season, non-ironically my favorite, and the times, they are a-changin’.

Halloween is almost upon us.

SPOOKY SPICY SHRIMPS

Behind the scenes here at PZTNT, the literal kettle is whistling and the metaphorical cauldron is bubbling. As promised last month, I’m revamping the smorgasbord of available services into something more streamlined and logical, if I may wax philosophically Vulcan for a moment.

  • protection from harm
  • realignment with soul purpose
  • fuller understanding of identity

Delphic Days with Bri Saussy: Divinations on the State of the World

detail of the priestess of delphi's lion-feet chair
john collier's painting Priestess of Delphi

Keep your eyes wide. Please heed the call.

The times, as ole Bobby D so famously sang, are a-changin’.

In these tumultuous times, we sacred arts practitioners can not afford to pretend that we aren’t affected – and that we cannot ourselves have an effect on the changing world around us.

That’s why I was so pleased when Bri Saussy announced (hopefully) the first Delphic Days call.

Bri says,

The fundamental inspiration behind this event is the Oracle at Delphi and the ways in which oracles, divinations, dreams, and intuitive knowings were once upon a time brought directly to bear on civic and political concerns.

HELL TO THE YEAH

Before the group call, each participant performed a divination on a question which Bri’d selected from a number of submissions. The question in question was this:

What do we need to know to improve our relationships with all of the other beings on this planet (all genders, races, species, etc.)?

TIGHT

To read Bri’s excellent recap of our conversation, see her Sacred Arts and Civics: a report on the Delphic Days gathering.

For my own divination, I used the brand new Schiffer edition of Joanna Powell Colbert’s beloved Gaian Tarot, which felt very appropriate considering the subject matter. (In-depth review of the deck coming soon; watch this space!)

I didn’t specify a particular spread of cards; rather, I simply pulled three cards in answer to the question (plus a couple of extras):

five tarot cards are laid on a red cloth with ornate gold designs upon it

I got The World reversed, the Three of Water, and the Two of Fire reversed.

The “underlying energy” or theme card – a technique I learned from tarot reader Adana Washington, wherein you consult the card on the bottom of the deck after shuffling and cutting – was the Nine of Fire reversed. The “next steps” card, which I pulled during the Delphic Days call, was the Six of Earth.

We need to know that underneath the issue of right relationship is an energetic imbalance.

We must return to a balanced state of being on every level. The natural flow between Source, ourselves, our planet, and all her creatures is blocked — and the blockage doesn’t come from them. It comes from us.

We must, to borrow one of Bri’s favorite phrases, strive to be whole, healed, and holy.

We must acknowledge that the change begins within ourselves.

priestess of delphi detail, her hands and torso

As sacred artists, we ought to be on the front lines of this internal-spiraling-outward change! We know all about this! COME ON, my golden delicious magical chickens!

Heal yourself. And if you’re here to facilitate healing for others, for heaven’s sake do the work.

But as Bri pointed out, sometimes healing an old wound means we have to lance the wound – opening it up so it may drain of poison. And opening up is hard when you’re a sensitive, skinless sacred artist. It hurts to open ourselves to our own pain and it hurts to feel into our relationships with the Earth and all her creatures, because they are hurting and we caused their pain.

If we can’t face this pain and do our part to heal these relationships, we’ll die. The Earth will shake and boil until we’re gone, and she’ll move on.

Speaking of the dead, I strongly feel from these cards and this conversation that in order to heal these relationships – and survive as a species – we’re called to return to old ways, ways that live in our subconscious/ancestral memory.

We’re asked to speak with and listen to the dead.

detail of the priestess of delphi's lion-feet chair

The dead have a lot to say.

The elevated dead can help us access and understand the old ways we seek to retrieve. They can bridge the gaps between us and the rest of the planet. And because they actually want to engage with us, they’re an excellent place to start when it comes to improving our relationships with both the spirit and material worlds.

And make no mistake – the number of Cup/Water cards we collectively got in our divinations is a clear indication that we must include the world of spirit in our mission to improve relations with our world and the creatures that make it up.

If you are not one who easily speaks with the dead but are interested in learning more, you might consider booking a Skype session with me. I’m a medium and a channel in addition to being an astrologer and tarot reader, and it’s time I stepped up and brought these gifts into play.

The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast

The slow one now will later be fast

As the present now will later be past

The order is rapidly fading

And the first one now will later be last

priestess of delphi detail of her face, closed eyes, rapt expression, red shawl draped over her head, bay leaf stalk peeking up to her left

The biggest takeaway I had from Delphic Days was this: we must play to our strengths, whatever they may be.

And I’m talking both magical and mundane strengths (so-called, because we know the line between the two is much less rigid than one might think).

If you can get out on the streets, hold a sign, or make your loud voice heard (I learned at a #BlackLivesMatter protest recently that my voice is very, very loud), then do that.

If you have the bandwidth to have hard conversations with the people in your life, then do that.

If you’re a talented at protection magic, justice work, blessings, hexing, or any kind of sacred arts whatsoever, do that work. Apply it to the change you know must occur in the world. The wise Professor Porterfield once advised me to take the old spells and rituals of protection, blessing, etc. and adapt them for the needs of the movement.

If you are an entertainer or an artist, if your gift is to uplift people who are being weighed down by the struggle, then do that. Joy is a vital part of the equation: without joy, love, and play, how can we continue? How can we be whole, healed, and holy?

Do what you can. Play to your strengths.

And remember:

In this mission to cultivate right relationship with the planet and all the other beings who live here, sacred arts are key. As sacred artists, one of the best places to start is to make space in our routine to sit with these kinds of questions, engaging our minds, emotions, and the Otherworld in order to come to whole, healed, and holy answers.

Thanks, and good luck out there.

xoxo

Dreaming Practical Magic

She Asked In A Dream, “What Is The Meaning of the Number Six?”

a woman with piercing blue anime eyes and a short blue bob puts a finger to her blue lips

I dream vividly and often.

Being only human, I record it as faithfully as I am able, which is to say, imperfectly.

When I am in the habit of writing down my dreams, each night yields, on average, as many as six written pages of dream-stuff.

THAT’S A LOTTA DREAMS

An essential part of the process, therefore, is mining the old journals for interesting and significant stuff.

Flipping through my current dream journal recently, an isolated sentence without any context caught my eye. It’s on page 4 of the dreams I had during the night of April 11:

Melissa of Little Fox Tarot questions the three $2 bills on my altar, asking, “What is the significance of the number 6?”

That’s all. Then the text returns to normal stress dreams about school and cereal.

The Number 6 is the number that shows the dividing path of Virtue and Vice. It signifies the strife between conscience and passion, the choice between the two paths of good and evil. It denotes the antagonism of natural forces.

— Sepharial, The Book of Charms and Talismans

Melissa is someone savvy who I absolutely trust; obviously, a dream question from her ought to be answered.

And hey, here’s the thing: I really do have three $2 bills on my altar.

So what is the significance of the number 6 in this context?

My childhood home phone number – the number that’s still listed in my contacts as “Home” – contains three sixes, three twos, and a three. For me these numbers are profoundly associated with the sensations of security, safety, and family – the union of disparate individuals beneath one roof, and the special protection afforded by such sacred safe space.

Six is the number of the tarot card The Lovers. We love, we fight, we forgive, we work together.

Six feels green. She is verdant with life and decomposing towards death at the same time; that old familiar duality.

It is the duality of dealing in money. You gotta spend it to make it.

The Good Lord giveth and the Good Lord taketh away.

eve6

Six is temptation and willpower.

She is pulled in two different directions. It is pleasure and pain to be so affected; to walk the path of virtue and responsibility while living with one’s own potential for self-destruction, waste, excess, and piss-poor decisions; to hold money in your hands and then let it slip through your fingers.

It is the endless tugging of the tides, retreating and returning again to us. Money waxes and wanes like the moon but owes its brilliance to the wealth of the sun.

The happiness and fulfillment we experience in the Sixes give us the self-confidence and energy to move on to the next phase in our lives.

— Joanna Powell Colbert, Journey Through the Gaian Tarot

My Six demands responsible money management.

Holy Death Interview

Won’t You Let Down Your Hair? Talking the Magic of Sacred Sacrifice With Jen Cintron

Tangled hair magic

Heal what has been hurt

Change the fates’ design

Save what has been lost

Bring back what once was mine…

— Tangled

FACT: hair is magic.

From the Biblical story of Samson to the many versions of familiar fairy tale Rapunzel, we’ve been raised to understand that hair is powerful — and its sacrifice can be even more so.

Today, I’d like to talk with someone who has a very personal experience with the magic of hair and the powerful act of its sacrifice.

Gentle reader, join me for a chat with Jen Cintrón of Intuitive Insights Tarot.

Recently, Jen (and her hair) underwent a miraculous spiritual experience. I asked if she would be willing to share her story with us today, and she graciously agreed.

Let’s talk hair!

howls-moving-castle-disneyscreencaps.com-11803

What are your thoughts on the sacred nature of hair?

I have thought about this…it is part of our body, and it enhances our sense of touch and feeling because we can feel vibrations through the hair – of the breeze or anything else. I believe I read that certain Native American peoples believe their hair is the source of their spiritual connectedness.

That was one of the reasons why I started growing my hair out when I decided to go into business as a psychic. I heard about this belief, and I was like you know what? I’m going to check it out, and grow my hair out and see how I feel about it.

How did you feel about it?

I liked that when I had my hair loose, I could feel the movement of the world around me a little bit more.

howls-moving-castle-disneyscreencaps.com-11805

Can you share with us the circumstances that recently led you to cut your hair?

One of my dearest, best friends found herself fighting for her life in the hospital. She was in the ICU and they told us that they didn’t know if she was going to make it. We thought she was going to die. I did not want her to go yet, you know? Such a beautiful creative soul, and I didn’t want her to go yet, so I…I remembered that when I was ill with cancer, my mother and one of her best friends did prayers to St. Rosa of Lima, and they swore by her miraculousness.

I looked into her story and I saw that when she was a teenager, they wanted to marry her off and she did not want to marry because she wanted to be married to Jesus. So to avoid getting married, she cut all of her hair. And so when I heard that, I was like, ok, so, I am going to make a promise to St. Rosa of Lima that if my friend recovers her health, is able to get out of the hospital, I am going to cut my hair short again.

After I made the promise, I took the time to say the prayer to St. Rosa of Lima that is traditionally said when you are making a petition to her, and that is accompanied by three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys, and three Glory Bes. I did that prayer every day up until I cut my hair. I actually lit my candle and got down on my knees and repeated the prayer asking for the total restoration of my friend’s health. I went full Catholic witch on this one!

howls-moving-castle-disneyscreencaps.com-11806

I also took St. Rosa of Lima’s prayer and wrote it on parchment paper with purple ink, anointed it with a healing oil mix and put it under her pillow while she was in the ICU. I blessed a bloodstone and put it under her pillow, too.

The week I’d made the promise, the doctors told us that if she made it, she was probably going to spend Christmas and New Year’s at the hospital. And she would probably not be able to go back to work for another 4-5 months after that.

What actually happened was, she was out of the hospital before Halloween. And she was back at work a month after! She made a miraculously fast recovery.

So on All Saint’s Day, about a week after she got out of the hospital, I went and got my hair cut. I asked them to put it all in a paper bag that I brought with me.

howls-moving-castle-disneyscreencaps.com-11810

After, I went out back to the fire pit and I built a fire. Into the fire I threw sacred incense. I lit a candle, did my prayer to St. Rosa of Lima, and threw my hair in the fire. Hair burns FAST and HOT. It was really interesting to see how it went up – PHEW!

I still say the prayer every now and then because she’s still in pain because of the surgery she had.

It was such a blessing and a favor that was granted to me.

howls-moving-castle-disneyscreencaps.com-11844

Had you any prior experience with such a ritual?

I was raised sort of lapsed Catholic. My family was not very devout, so I’d never seen any of them do something like this, but in Puerto Rico I had heard of people making promises to do things like this for saints. I never thought that I would do things like that. But then the need arose, so…

St. Rosa of Limas father was from Puerto Rico, so I felt that ancestral connection to her, and I pray to her in Spanish.

Thank you, Jen, for sharing this powerful story with us.

Thank you for letting me share the story of God’s miraculous healing power! I can never lose faith again, not in the face of such a blessing!

About Jen: Jen is a talented singer, musician, mala maker, and intuitive reader. Born in Puerto Rico, she now resides in Milwaukee. Read more about Jen and her story at her site, Intuitive Insights Tarot.

Divination Living A Magical Life

Surrender, My Spicy Shrimps

Paige looks at you; bare trees behind steady gaze behind rabbit mug of tea

a woman with long loose hair holds a mug up to her face; it is emblazoned with an illustration of a rabbit surrounded by woodland plants. behind her is a group of bare trees.

Sometimes, you just don’t know.

Sometimes, half the battle is admitting it.

I’ve been feeling this way lately. Like I’m waiting for something, some wave that’s been gathering itself far out to sea. It looms in my consciousness.

It’s hard, the waiting.

You want whatever’s going to happen to just HAPPEN already. You want to know what’s coming. You want to see it. You want to know you aren’t crazy. You want to know how much of what you think you know will be washed away when the wave hits, and what gleaming treasures will be left in its gasping wake.

But you have to wait.

You must surrender to the uncertainty of the Now.

SURRENDER, MY SPICY SHRIMPS

Of course, I’m not talking complete surrender where you lie down on the sand and wait for the wave to come and drown you, or give up on the great cause to which you’ve dedicated yourself. You never surrender when it’s the big issues, the ones that really matter. You always keep fighting injustice, intolerance, ignorance, and oppression. You keep walking the beach, picking up trash, helping creatures in need and graciously accepting assistance from others.

SOLIDARITY, MY SHRIMPS

But sometimes, you just don’t know.

Sometimes, walking the beach feels like aimless wandering. You forget what you were doing here in the first place. You’re tempted to say “fuck it” and go home to binge on vices, whether they be food, drugs, drink, or Netflix.

This even happens to those who are in touch with their ability to sense what’s coming next — diviner, dreamer, psychic, intuitive, sacred artist, witch, or whatever you want to call one who’s plugged in.

two small but ornate gravestones stand amidst the patchy snow and bare ground. a row of other old gravestones stand in the backgroundSometimes you can’t see what’s coming next because what’s coming next is a period of necessary uncertainty.

A period of necessary uncertainty is where I’ve been all winter, like a lost rabbit wandering the warrens beneath the cold earth, skirting the dens of dreaming bears.

Their dreams are heavy, complex, rich like deep soil and life blood.

They frighten and fascinate me.

I want to sing, but the voice catches in my throat, chalky with fear. I whisper into my whiskers.

TWITCH WITCH MUFUCKA

Now, at last, the earth is thawing.

At last, I can emerge, sun-warmed, and thump the good green ground.

At last, I can begin to act upon the dreams I dreamed in the dark.

Cry hallelujah! Spring is here!

I SURRENDER

And, as is my wont, I whipped up a little tarot spread to help me navigate these transitional times.

This is my “ok I don’t know anything, I surrender, plz help me, magic crossroads beyond time and space” tarot spread. Below, you can see it in action with the Wildwood Tarot.

CHECK IT OUT MY SHRIMPS

six tarot cards are laid out in a long, skinny cross pattern. to the right is a crystal wand atop a dark blue cloth sheath. beneath it are Mexican tiles of birds and flowers. a bottle of Cholula hot sauce lurks in the background

Card 1 – Underlying Energy
Knight of Bows: Fox

Beneath it all lies the wild desire for adventure! The creative itch! I want to run, and play, and be centered in joy. Given that this is a fire card (in the Wildwood Tarot, Bows correspond to Wands), I’m also put in mind of my challenging natal Saturn in Sagittarius – and if you’re following along with the stars, you know Saturn is currently in Sag, which means I’m experiencing my Saturn return).

So our theme is balancing the need for adventure, creative expression, and freedom with the need for discipline and structure.

Card 2 – Current Position
12 The Mirror reversed

LOL YEP. This card corresponds to the Hanged Man, which signifies to me a sort of “time out” in which to figure your shit out. I’ve been feeling suspended, uncertain, upside-down and inside-out. There’s been massive amounts of healing work to do; it’s been like I’m stuck in time beyond time, space beyond space. Yesterday I even lay down in the cemetery in a literal Hanged Man position! The crows muttered to themselves from the trees above me. The world turns.

Card 3 – Where I’ve Been
Two of Stones: Challenge

Yes, indeed. I’ve been champing at the bit for a creative challenge. I’ve been bouncing back and forth between ideas, fighting to get anything done, waiting for spring, doing that fun New England dance between snow, rain, flowers, good waking earth, warmth and cold. The awakening process is a doozy and no two years are the same. This is my first New England spring in five years, and although I miss San Francisco fiercely, good god have I missed what, to me, is a “natural” season, by which I mean a complete shit show of changing weather.

close up of five tarot cards laid out on a purple and red cloth

Card 4 – What distracts me
Three of Arrows: Jealousy reversed

Ohhh hey! I kind of secretly love the Three of Swords. Here, this card speaks to me of unproductive navel-gazing. I can spend eternity making notes, scribbling ideas, and perpetually thinking and journaling without ever taking those ideas off the page and birthing them into the real world.

It’s also wicked easy to get caught up in the game of compare despair, in which you are always the loser. Stop paying attention to what other people are doing! Focus on your own biz, bish!

OK SURE

It’s also extremely easy to get caught up in wounds of the past, eternally tonguing that sore and perpetuating the self-defeating and destructive cycles instead of committing to healing. Breaking cycles is hard. Perpetuating them is easy. As a Lunar Gemini, I’m gifted with the ability to talk myself into anything – including the lie that I’m doing healing work when really, I’m just chasing my tail in circles.

Card 5 – What supports me
2 The Seer reversed

Well, howdy! This is my mystical practice, but not on the professional level. This is my private practice, my personal rituals. This is the behind-the-scenes stuff. The moments of communion with the divine, with animals and plants, with spirits and angels. This is my intuition, my personal power, my clairsentience, my inner knowing. This is also my long-distance witch ladies, who support me from afar. I’m lookin’ at you, beauties!

BLOW A KISS

Card 6 – The road ahead; The focal point towards which I ought to move
King of Stones: Wolf reversed

OH YEAH. It’s time to seclude myself in the studio. It’s time to howl my creative life into being. It’s time to begin doubling down on my collaborative projects – Wolf is a pack animal, after all. And considering the hierarchical structure of the pack, Wolf tells me that I have need for orderliness – and the best way to begin cultivating more orderliness in my life is to begin with an area in which I am already well disciplined. For me, that’s the field in which I was trained – visual art.

It’s already begun. About a week ago, I cleared my desk, brought my watercolors into the studio, sat down and started painting.

I swear the smell of wet watercolor paper makes me salivate.

a watercolor palette open on a desk, a group of brushes laying on a rainbow leopard print kerchief beside it. on the wall behind the desk is propped an old unfinished watercolor self-portrait, a watercolor image of the Saturn and Sagittarius sigils on a blue background, a calendar open to April, and the Ten of Wands tarot card leaning against a blank piece of stationary topped with a planet. a glass of painting water is visible on the left.

So, I surrender.

I surrender to the studio, the belly-button need to create, and the throbbing uncertainty of when the wave will hit and where I’ll find myself once it does.

I surrender to the present moment.

I surrender to the wind and sun and good New England soil..

I surrender, and I do the best I can.

And you?

What calls for your surrender — a situation from which you need to walk away? A yearning you need to follow?

At what crossroads do you find yourself?

What fields lay before you, fallow and full of promise?

If you’re grappling with uncertainty, I’d be honored to sling cards with you. Get in on the good vibes; book your own email or Skype reading now!

If you yourself like to read cards and decide to give this spread a try, I’d love to hear about it! Let me know in the comments below.

Blessings on you and all your endeavors.

AND A BIG HUG, TOO

Honoring Your Moon Sign

collage of a woman standing with hands folded behind her back, her head turned away and silhouetted against a bright yellow moon in a dark purple sky

I’m in love with the moon.

Driving when the moon is out is dangerous for me, because I can’t help but crane my neck around to get a glimpse of her.

Walking when the moon is out is also dangerous; I’ve often tripped or walked into something while gazing rapturously up at her shining face.

I LOVE HER SO MUCH YOU GUYS

I also love astrology.

It’s an amazing language that helps us better understand ourselves, our world, and our beloveds.

ALL GOOD THINGS, MY TASTY HOMEFRIES

It’s often said that the top three astrological positions to be aware of are the Sun sign, the Moon sign, and the Ascendent or rising sign.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE MOON who may or may not also be my girlfriend

Our moon sign represents our needs, our emotional body, and our comfort zone.

(And when I say “moon sign” I mean the position of the Moon at the time of your birth. More information about how to find your moon sign at the bottom of this post.)

For those who struggles with anxiety, depression, and/or illness of any kind, the moon sign can be a great indicator for self-care.

When I begin to slip under the ocean waters of depression, I turn to my moon sign as one pathway back to the shore.

My moon is in Gemini, the mutable Air sign ruled by planet Mercury.

Gemini loves travel, talk, storytelling, spontaneity, exploration, escapism, and getting busy with the hands.

So some of the ways in which I honor my moon sign include:
  • Impulsive day trips
  • Going down the tumblr rabbit hole
  • Binge-watching a really good serial story on Netflix; lately it’s been Twin Peaks and The X Files so clearly I’m in some kinda spooky ’90s FBI mood
  • Listening to Bri Saussy’s audios from Spinning Gold
  • Feeling myself
  • Busting out my watercolors
  • Doodling in my sketchbook
  • Getting blazed with an intellectually-minded buddy and talking about All The Things
  • Going to the movies
  • Listening to music

All things that honor my Gemini need to connect, chat, use my hands, and be freeeee Sméagol is free

Recently, I was feeling those dark ocean waters begin to lap at me.

MAYDAY

Then, the perfect opportunity to revitalize myself with moony Gemini activities fell into my lap: my babe Gala’s book release party for Radical Self Love, her shiny literary baby.

HAPPY BOOK BABY HAPPENING

A road trip to NYC. On a Wednesday — the day of Mercury, ruling planet of Gemini. With the moon in Sagittarius — Gemini’s opposite but equally travel-loving sign.

And the cherry on top: spending time with Gala and Veronica, two of my very favorite witchy babes.

YES PLEASE SWISS CHEESE

I loaded some snacks and a sack full of old CDs into the car, put on my sparkle star cape, and hit the road.

SHIT YEAH MUFUCKAS

It felt so good to fly down the highway, sing along with some battered Cranberries CDs, and gad about with shiny happy New Yorkers.

And when I got back to Massachusetts at 2am, I fell into the deepest, most satisfied sleep.

GEMINI MOON HAPPY HAPPY

And speaking of soundtracks, here’s a lovely live recording of my Gemini moon theme song: “The Moon and St. Christopher” as performed by Kate Rusby, one of my faves.

I mean, how cute is she? Crackers on a plate!!!

WITH GRAPES

(St. Christopher is the patron saint of travel and, if Tom Waits is to be believed, bachelors. Appropriate for freedom-loving Gemini.)

Now: not sure about your moon sign?

Draw up a free chart at astro.com — and for bonus points, check out the Lunarium lunar calendar to find out what phase of the moon you were born under (be sure to adjust the time zone accordingly). Just input the month and year of your birth and see what’s up!

Totally lost in the astrobabble?

Check out my mentor Theresa Reed’s free resource, Star School. Once a month she breaks down the basics of astrology for total beginners. Once you know your Moon sign, you can check out that sign’s characteristics in Lesson 2 and begin to extrapolate some self-care practices from there.

AND TELL ME WHAT YOU FIND. For serious my fellow babies — I want to know your moon sign and what kind of self-care it indicates for you. Comment below or hit me up on social media @tarotandtea!

Living A Magical Life Practical Magic

Respect Yourself: Engage Post-Ritual Self Care

wave-of-depression

Make no mistake: working between the worlds takes a lot out of you.

After liminal ritual work, taking the proper self-care steps is vital.

What are “the proper self-care steps”? Well, that depends on you.

I live with depression, ADHD, and various addictive and disordered tendencies (by that I mean things like disordered eating, disordered sleep, serial obsession, and hyper focus). I’m comfortable with solitude, and require it regularly to recharge my batteries. I live alone, in a relatively isolated community where I don’t have a solid support network close by. I have lazybones Mars in slothful Taurus.

My post-ritual self-care needs to take all of those things into account.

For me, if self-care is not properly administered after ritual work, depression can set in.

Monday the 22nd of February saw a luminous Virgo Full Moon and the midway point of my three-day Devoted to Sovereignty Moon Lights ritual.

That’s three full days of raising energy, holding space, and living in the liminal.

This work is vital and draining. It consumes me insidiously, taking much more energy than I appear to be expending.

After three days, the lights were all burned out on the altar… and in me.
moon-over-the-deadAnd you guys – I goofed.

I tried to go back to work too soon.

Overcompensating for the luxuriant Mars in Taurus tendencies, I gave myself a good old Saturnine kick in the pants. “Back to work, swine!” I might as well have barked at myself as I reeled into the office.

It didn’t work.

What do you do when you’ve goofed? What do you do when you’ve backslid out of balance?

Here are some things I do:

  • Drink plenty of water! And eat grounding, nourishing food as best I can.
  • Feel the feelings. Acknowledge what is happening, and face it. As Louis CK says, “let the sadness hit you like a truck.”
  • Journal the fuck out of it. This helps me, a lunar Gemini, to both open the floodgate of feelings and to process the resulting deluge. In classic ADHD Gemini fashion, I do this in my Bullet Journal, DIVINA journal, and sketchbook, on my watercolor pad and big cork board, and in my dream journal (lots of insights to be found there, my dreaming darlings). There’s no wrong way to journal the fuck out of your feelings.
  • Embrace solitude. I will confess — this one is the easiest one for me. I require solitude to recharge and enjoy my own company immensely. But often I see others putting off solitude by turning to their phones, surrounding themselves with people, binge watching Netflix, and/or getting really fucked up. The truth is that sometimes we need to be alone with our thoughts and feelings. This is where the commitment to healing happens. This is where communion with our spirit occurs. This is where it all begins.
  • Cultivate gratitude. An attitude of gratitude brings in the rush of good feelings to fill the void left by the sad feelings that have, thank you Louis for the turn of phrase, hit me like a truck. Gratitude prevents me from curling into the fetal position, thus closing the sadness into myself and prolonging the experience. Gratitude opens me up, lifts my chin and my spirits, reminds me to smile and breathe.
  • Take a bath. Or a shower, or a swim, or a dip. Water is the great cleanser, and if I’m having trouble getting in touch with or releasing the feelings, water can usually help. Plus, bath magic is so easy and fun! Especially if you, like me, still have your childhood rubber ducky. Squeak squeak!
  • Return to the practice. There are a number of sacred practices in which I regularly engage. They include meditation, divination, active imagination, cultivating calmness, communing with my spirit guides, physically exercising, and reclaiming self, power, and position.
  • Commit to healing. Healing is a lifelong process, and there is always some old wound or other being cracked open. Pain oozes or stabs out, and while an initial reaction may be to run and hide or push it back down in a panic – ouch! this does not feel good! mayday! mayday! – it’s far better in the long run to face and embrace the opportunity to reveal, heal, and transform the source of pain, whatever it may be.

healing-glass

Commitment to healing is the big one for me right now.

For clarity, medicine, and sacred support on this never-ending healing journey, I’m turning to the cards and a new Heart Hurt Healing tea blend I’ve whipped up.

Are you also in this kind of a broken-open ouchy-feels where’s-my-Bandaid place?

Let’s be perpetually healing people together!

Practical Magic

Devoted to Sovereignty: Introducing Moon Lights

–♥–

Somewhere out there, beneath the pale moonlight…

The fattening face of the Moon rises later each day.

The February Full Moon in Virgo will soon be upon us.

GOOD OLE VIRGO

Once again, we’re given the opportunity to celebrate, rededicate, and bless aspects of our lives. Suspended between Pisces Sun and Virgo Moon, we are invited to dance, dance, dance, and shake the very foundation of our world with the drumming of feet.

I want to try something.

My dear friend and co-conspirator, Amelia Quint (who happens to have Venus in Virgo), and I often talk about an etymology lesson we once received from our beloved teacher, Briana Saussy:

That the Virgo root word “virgin” truly means “sovereign” – as in, unmarried, unconquered, belonging solely to oneself.

I want to harness the power of this Virgo Moon for the good of the world — by devoting ourselves to our own sovereignty.

In a world that wants to take power from us – where corporations play on our anxieties to sell us stuff, politicians fear-monger to get elected, and law enforcement officers murder and terrorize people of color with impunity – being devoted to our sovereignty is a radical act.

Rise up, my kings and queens, as Sandy would say.

To devote ourselves to — i.e. to love and be loyal to — the goal of embodying our sovereignty is to change the world.

Won’t you join me, and an intimate coven of magical babes, in celebrating this Full Moon by crafting a spell? A spell to honor this devotion?

The orchestra swells!

LET’S GET MAGICAL

All the angels and all the wizards, black and white

Are lighting candles in our hands

Can you feel them, yes, touching hands before our eyes?

— Tori Amos, “Sister Janet”

IMG_3997

When we devote ourselves to our own sovereignty, we make the world a better place.

We’re raising our vibrations. We’re giving ourselves permission to be whole and holy, break free from fearful paralysis, and embody our best selves.

Simply devoting ourselves to sovereignty – that state of being wherein we feel in alignment with our purpose, personal power, and ability to grow, change, and co-create our lives – is a powerful ritual act.

NO BUTTS ABOUT IT

SO OKAY: we want to nourish the world by nourishing our sovereignty. Ritual intention is go.

Next — the altar.

There is room on the altar for six participants (plus me makes lucky number seven). If you already know you’d like to be one of the six, scroll on down and click the big orange button.

Once you check out, I’ll email you to get your birth information and some background on your current situation. You’ll get a small homework assignment to ground the work in your own life. I’ll prepare your candle and petition paper with herbs, oils, and plenty of gold glitter, obviously, because this is Glitter Hobbit HQ we’re talking about here. Cards will be slung, omens observed, and carefully selected music will be played (and danced to, naturally snatchurally).

Oh…and did I mention David Bowie will be our ritual co-pilot?

So you, dear star baby, who want to change the world and embody excellence in your own sovereign life — I invite you to join us for these Virgo Moon Lights.

Come, dahling — let’s boogie.
