The Only Thing

Signs and wonders, water stain writing the wall
Daniel’s message, blood of the moon on us all
— Sufjan Stevens, “The Only Thing” from Carrie & Lowell

The exhilaration of initiation.

The stink of failure and frustration.

A parking lot under the moon.

A car in the middle of a field.

Two lone graves in wet grass.

A cathedral of capitalism beside a river.

Dragonflies, butterflies, feral boardwalk cats.

Saturn returns.

It’s a strange, strange, strange world.

Do you ever feel stretched out, as if your body is a long cat and someone has just picked you up beneath your armpits?

Do you ever feel strange and certain? Do you ever know something without knowing how you know?

Do you ever feel completely lost and unknowing?

Do you ever wonder where the moon came from? Who is her father? Where is her mother? Did she spring fully formed or did she grow, gathering herself to herself over time?

The only thing I know for certain is love.

I’m sending love to you right now.

I know you need it. We all do.

The only thing I know is it’s wise to be kind.

Be kind to yourself today. Be kind to your world.

I love you!
